Panguni Vizha is here again
The month of Panguni is something truly special to Mylapore and its people. It's more than just a festival. It's an emotion. The streets come alive with music, lights, and prayers. The scent of jasmine flowers fills the air. People from all around the world come back home, just to be a part of this beautiful tradition.
The Panguni Peruvizha at Sri Kapaleeswarar Temple is one of the most loved festivals in Chennai. It starts with the Kodi Yetram (flag hoisting) and continues for 10 days with beautiful events that include:
- Adhikara Nandi: The Lord is taken in procession on his majestic vehicle, Nandi—the celestial bull through the Mada streets (April 5)
- Rishabha Vahanam: A special midnight procession (April 8)
- Therottam: The grand temple car of Kabaleeswarar (April 9)
- Arupathu Moovar: In honour of the 63 great Nayanmar saints of Shaivism (April 10)
- Thirukalyanam: The divine wedding of Kapaleeshwarar and Karpagambal (April 12)
With every passing year, it only gets more and more vibrant during Panguni. Mylapore becomes a completely different world altogether. Devotees fill the streets, the temple is a spectacle to behold with all the lights, colours, and celebrations.
And here at Nithya Amirtham, we are proud to be in the heart of all the celebrations. We were happy to do our part during the festival. Our team from our Mylapore outlet set up buttermilk stalls to help tired devotees beat the heat. You could also find our Nannari sherbet stalls placed around the Mada streets, serving a traditional, cooling drink that's loved during the hot summer days.
We also handed out paper caps to those who came by, a simple gesture to help them shield themselves from the harsh sun as they walked along following the chariot, the music, and the divine celebrations.
Just our little way of being one with the people and what they believe in. Drop by some time to witness the celebrations, you're sure to take back memories you'll cherish for a lifetime.
